Erice: The quiet charm

The promontory of Trapani is dominated by Erice, perched on the top of the mountain with the same name.
This place seems to have captured the time to make it still.
Far away from the mass tourism, devoted to silence and contemplation, Erice astounds visitors with the quiet splendor of its details, and as well with the sight of a wonderful natural setting. A unique natural terrace, where the view opens onto the Mediterranean and the entire Western Sicily.
The urban plan has a triangular shape, enclosed within the ancient Roman walls on which stand majestic towers and three Norman gates.
Along the cobbled streets in the perfectly preserved medieval village, houses and flowered courtyards lay on the folds of the landscape.
Erice has been inhabited for centuries by flourishing civilizations, and hosts an impressive variety of architectural treasures.
In the town there are more than 60 churches, including St. Julian Norman, dating to the eleventh century, and the Mother Church, characterized by an impressing gothic portal and precious artistic works.
The majestic Castle of Venus was built in the XII century on one of the most scenic places of the town, where once stood the shrine of Venus Ericina. Ever since its foundation, that are lost in myth, the city was in fact dedicated to the worship of the goddess, symbol of love and prosperity.
So stands Erice, between sacred and profane, between clouds and sea.
